CANDIDATES FOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS


The following club members have been selected by the Nominating Committee as candidates for the clubs Board of Directors. Three of the candidates will be elected to the board at the election on September 29 for three-year terms beginning July 1, 2006. One of the three new directors will be selected by the board to serve as club president for a term beginning July 1, 2008. The Nominating Committee consisted of the recent past club presidents and was chaired by Marty Walker. The candidates, listed in alphabetical order, provided the following biographical information:

LEX AKERS: James C. Dowell Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Missouri-Columbia. Before coming to UMC he was the Janey and Dolph Briscoe Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Director of the Division of Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He was previously a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the Center for Solid State Electronics Research at Arizona State University and has worked at Southwest Research Institute, Motorola, Intel, Rockwell, and the Jet Propulsion Lab. Married with a daughter who is an Emergency Room Physician in Reno, Nevada, has two granddaughters, and a 5 year old son.

JAMES W. ELLIOTT, D.D.S.: Club member since 1988. Wife, one son, one daughter, and three grandchildren. Dentist, practicing in Columbia since 1968. Attended the University of Missouri with a BS in Education, taught high school in Fulton, Missouri. Graduate of the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Dentistry earning a DDS degree in 1966. Moved to Columbia in 1968 after serving 26 months as a Captain in the Dental Corps in the US Army. Served as President of the Missouri Dental Association, Central Dental Society, and Missouri Dental Insurance Services and currently a member of these organizations. Voted Dentist of the Year in 1991 by the Missouri Dental Association. Dental examiner for the Central Regional Dental Testing Service. Served on the Board of Deacons, Board of Trustees, and Nominating committee at First Baptist Church, Columbia. I have been a member of the board of directors of the Cerebral Palsy Society, Cancer Board, and currently am a member of the Columbia Airport Advisory Board. Honorary membership in Pierre Fauchard Academy and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists. Member of the Jefferson Club and Missouri Alumni Association. Host for visiting Rotarians from Mexico and host for GSE team from India. Traveled with our Rotary Club to Mexico in February 2005.

GLEN D. HEGGIE: Clinical Asst. Professor and Nuclear Medicine Technology Program Director with Cardiopulmonary and Diagnostic Sciences at MUs School of Health Professions. Moved to Columbia from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in October 2003 with his wife, their son (Grantat MU School of Business) and daughter (Marnieat MU majoring in viola performance and German following her return from a one year Rotary exchange in Austria). While in Edmonton he was responsible for teaching and administering the Clinical Phase of their nuclear medicine program for 27 years. Prior to moving to Alberta he lived in Nova Scotia and England. Glen holds a Doctorate in the Administration of Post-Secondary Education (2000), a Masters in Adult and Post-Secondary Education (1987) and a Baccalaureate in Adult and Vocational Education (1984)  all from the University of Albertaand his RTNM in Nuclear Medicine Technology (Halifax, 1973) and CAMRT Fellowship (Ottawa, 2000). His primary interest and involvement with Rotary has centered on the Rotary Youth Exchange programs. University activities since joining MU have included the Campus Writing Program, New Faculty Teaching Scholars, Wakonse Fellow (2005) and currently the Presidents Academic Leadership Program.

DARLENE JOHNSON: Born in Jefferson City, Missouri. (Jeff City Jay!). Bachelor of Science in Education, University of Missouri. Married to Harold E. Bud Johnson (deceased) and have four sons and six grandchildren living in the area. Employments: College of Education, Dean's OfficeSecretary to Assistant Dean; Glauser RealtyReal Estate Broker, GRI; and currently Harold E. Johnson Cos., Vice President. Rotary activities: Membership Committee, Committee for "Inaugural" gala for District Governor R. D. Ross, Rotary Paul Harris Fellow, International group to found "twin" club with Cuernavaca Oriente, and Paws for Projects Committee. JIM OLLAR: A Missouri native having lived, schooled and worked in St. Louis, Jackson, Johnson and Boone counties. In Columbia since 1966. Most fortunately married "sensational" Sandy. Over-achieving children Tom and Suzanne have provided five outstanding granddaughters. Undergraduate degree, economics, CMSU; MBA, finance, UM. Past president, Daniel Boone Little League, Hill Creek Acres Homeowners Assoc., Admin. Mgmt. Soc., Epsilon Sigma Phi, Bethel Church moderator. Retired Asst. V.P Univ. of Mo. after 35+ years in administration with Academic Affairs/University Extension. Currently busy visiting granddaughters, fishing, golf, redoing/maintaining home and lake place and Rotary fundraising committee.

AL TACKER: Al Tacker has been Executive Director of Family Counseling Center, a multi-site mental health and alcohol and drug treatment agency, since 1988, and a Rotary member since 1996. He has been actively involved in the Rotary student exchange program, having hosted three international students, and is currently the club's Rotary Youth Exchange officer. Previous community service includes six years on the Columbia City Council (1981-87) along with service on several city commissions and task forces; the Community Partnership Board of Directors; and KOPN radio (where he did everything from political interviews to playing rock oldies to doing play by play of Rock Bridge football games). A native of the East Coast, Al is among the many who came to Columbia to go to college (grad school in geology) and never left. His prior work experience was in research, both at the University and in the private sector. He is married to Mary Jo Herde, who works at the University's Asian Affairs Center.
