Columbia Rotary Club Signs Fraternal Agreement with
Cuernavaca Oriente
The Columbia Rotary Club and the Cuernavaca
Oriente Rotary Club, Mexico,
signed a fraternal agreement on October 23, at the Columbia
meeting at Dulaney Hall, Columbia
College.
The two clubs have as their goal the strengthening the
bonds of friendship and promoting, in a cooperative way, events and Rotary
projects for the good of the communities. As
a joint project, the clubs plan to apply for a Rotary International Grant
to help finance a mobile breast cancer screening unit which can be used in
rural areas of Mexico. “This brotherhood permits both countries to
unite their economic power to achieve these objectives,” said Héctor Barrios, president of Cuernavaca Rotary Club Oriente. “The continual growth of the Rotary exchange has
as its ultimate goal, nothing less than the promotions of world peace.”
Ten Cuernavaca Rotary club members arrived on October
22, and stayed with host Columbia Rotary families for six days. The group gave the Columbia Rotary Club program
which included a Power Point presentation of their many projects to help
the disabled and to improve the environment. It
was followed by a musical presentation by the president, Héctor Barrios and his wife Avi.
“With this friendship
visit and fraternal agreement, we hope to diminish the international gap,”
said Andy Bonderer, president of the Columbia
Rotary Club.
The Mexican visitors
attended the musical Parade, toured the MU campus, visited
the state capitol and the Lake of the
Ozarks,
attended the Homecoming parade,
tailgate and football game. A farewell
dinner was given by Darlene Johnson on Saturday evening.
On Sunday the group attended mass at the St. Louis Cathedral,
ate lunch at the home of Andrea Miles Moran, daughter of Rotary member Dr.
John Miles, visited the arch, the
Galeria and the St. Charles Casino. The group departed with
tears as they said “Hasta febrero” to their Columbia hosts. A group from the Columbia Rotary Club
is planning to visit their Cuernavaca Fraternal
Club in February. Judy Elliott served as chairperson
for this international exchange.
