2003-04 Project: Rotary Club of Columbia, MO

(Excerpt from 12-04-2003 Newsletter)

Today's program was presented by Club President-Elect Marty Walker, our International Service Chair, who presented information about a project our Board of Directors has approved to assist a school for young children in Brazil.
The Belem, Brazil Rotary Club currently provides the following benefits to the Rotary Friendship School in Belem

•    25% of operating funds, state 10%, remainder donations
•    Maintains school for 200 children
•    Off sets the cost of staff
•    Ensure that children receive a daily bath
•    Receive four meals daily
•    Limited medical care and lots of LOVE!!!
•    Educational experiences
•    School hours 0730 to 1730

However, they still need books, educational toys, art supplies and transportation.  The project approved by the Board will purchase a 2003/04 Fiat van  to assist in getting the children to school in inclement weather (79” of rain per year); transporting sick children to home and doctor, and providing dependable logistical support for purchasing food, supplies and other school maintenance needs.  The total funding for this vehicle breaks down as follows:

•    Purchase a 2003/04 Fiat van
•    Total cost of vehicle R$36,000.00 or $22,000 US
•    Downtown’s contribution $8,000
•    District’s “match” $1,000*
•    Rotary International’s match $8,000*
•    Belem Rotary Club’s Match $5,000* US
*All amounts are approximate

Club members voted to approve the proposal to participate in the purchase of the van as this year’s International Project for the Downtown Rotary Club.
