Cindy Sheltmire introduced our speaker, Ken LaZebnik, Dean for the Performing Arts, Stephens College.

Columbia native, Ken LaZebnik, is home…sort of.  As dean for the performing arts at Stephens College, Ken makes his home here in Columbia as well as Los Angeles, California.  He commutes weekly between the two very different cities in order to keep up two professions he loves; writing and teaching.

Ken talked about some of the new programs available at Stephens College, especially the Summer Film Institute.  Stephens has the only women’s college to offer a degree in Digital Film and they are capitalizing on that fact.  For the second summer in a row, Stephens is hosting a hands-on boot camp for women interested in filmmaking.  50 women, old and young, with a passion and interest in filmmaking, will spend two weeks in July practicing the art under direction of working professionals.  This year, students will film a family drama set in Columbia, Missouri.

In addition to digital film, Stephens offers an outstanding program in theater.  The theater department was recently ranked #2 in the nation by the Princeton Review.  The program puts on outstanding performances throughout the year on campus in Columbia and through the summer theater program in Okoboji, Iowa.

For more information about the Summer Film Institute and other programs at Stephens College, visit their website at www.stephens.edu.
