Volunteers are needed to host youth exchange students for one night during Rotary’s 100th Anniversary celebration this summer.  More than 60 students, including foreign students and US students scheduled to go abroad next summer, will be participating. Please contact Tim Donovan at 573-445-5704 if you’re interested in being a host.

DUES:
Steve Scott announced that there are some who’ve not paid their dues yet.  He also wanted the group to know that it is acceptable to submit excused absence requests and make up information to him via e-mail.  Please contact Steve with questions.

Shoes for Orphan Souls:
298 pairs of shoes have been purchased or donated and there is $224.41 in the account.  Louie Van Drie brought in a batch of shoes today!  President Walker reported that we’ve collected less than our goal of an average of 10 pairs of shoes per club member.  He reminded us that the deadline is approaching and encouraged everyone to participate.

Check out our SOS web page for a graphical representation of our progress to date. If anyone is interested in making a financial donation to the shoe drive, checks should be made out to “Shoes for Orphan Souls.”
Remember:
  • Shoe drive runs through April, 2005;
  • Shoes should be tied together;
  • No need to dontate the shoebox (recycle it!)
  • Donations can be made in the following ways:
    • New, sturdy, sensible shoes for 1-18 yrs.
    • Cash or checks (made out to "Shoes for Orphan Souls")
For additional information on the worldwide campaign, check out the Shoes for Orphan Souls website.

Committee Chair: Trevor McIntyre, 882-6675.

HISTORY MOMENT
  • EXCHANGE OF CLUB BANNERS

    One of the colorful traditions of many Rotary clubs is the exchange of small banners, flags or pennants. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at "make up" meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.

    The Rotary International board recognized the growing popularity of the banner exchange back in 1959 and suggested that those clubs which participate in such exchanges give careful thought to the design of their banners in order that they be distinctive and expressive of the community and country of which the club is a part. It is recommended that banners include pictures, slogans or designs which portray the territorial area of the club.

    The board was also mindful of the financial burden such exchanges may impose upon some clubs, especially in popular areas where many visitors make up and request to exchange. In all instances, clubs are cautioned to exercise discretion and moderation in the exchange of banners in order that the financial obligations do not interfere with the basic service activities of the club.

    Exchanging club banners is a very pleasant custom, especially when a creative and artistic banner tells an interesting story of community pride. The exchange of banners is a significant tradition of Rotary and serves as a tangible symbol of our international fellowship.

NEED A RIDE TO ROTARY?

The Hospitality
Committee prepares get-well cards for members who are ill and can set up rides for members who can't otherwise get to meetings. Please notify Gena Scott by email at scottgl@missouri.edu, by phone at 882-6371 (work) or 442-1865 (home).

Cindy Sheltmire introduced the speaker, Dr. Ian Worthington, associate professor of history, University of Missouri-Columbia.  Dr. Worthington, an expert on Alexander the Great, addressed the topic of Alexander the Great.

Dr. Worthington recenty published a book entitled Alexander the Great: Man and God.  The recent release of Oliver Stone’s epic, Alexander, fanned interest once again for the famous and infamous leader.  Dr. Worthington’s educational and entertaining presentation debunked many of the stories surrounding this historical figure.
