  •   TREAT THAT SPECIAL VALENTINE: Valentine's Day is coming up soon, and a Tiger/Cougar Paw sterling silver bracelet would make a great gift for that special someone. The bracelets are available for $30 today and next week at the club meeting - please see Darlene Johnson.  After next week they will be stored at Jim Elliott's office and continue to be available for purchase. This is a club fund-raising project, and proceeds will be divided between our club for local giving and our sister club in Mexico.
  • Monday, March 20th is Rotary Student Government Day in Jefferson City.  This tradition started in 1955.  High school juniors and seniors are invited to Jefferson City for the day to learn about state government.  There are a few information sheets on the tables.  If anyone is interested in helping with this by serving as a chaperones and providing transportation, please let Darcy know.
  • Sunday, February 5th is Rotary Day for Mizzou Wrestling.  All Rotarians will be admitted for only $2.  #12 Mizzou vs. #8 Oklahoma at 1:00 p.m. at the Hearnes Center.

Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar Susan Blakey spoke about her studies in Spain. She was introduced by Melvin Platt.

Susan recently returned from Spain, having completed her ambassadorial scholarship. where she completed her MBA program at the University of Alcala. She was sponsored by District 6080 and Metro Rotary Club of Columbia.  Her presentation included a slide show of some of the places she visted and people she met , and she responded to several questions from Club members.

Some of the things we learned:

 - Alcala has a population of around 200,000;
-  About 70% of her classes were spoken in Spanish;
-  Cultural exchange enhanced through group work and projects;
-  Susan took flamenco dance lessons - part of the MBA program?;
-  The majority of stores in Spain close from 2-5 pm each day, but stay open late, and
-  Evening dinner is often around 9 or 10 pm.

Melvin Platt is currently seeking students for the 2007-08 academic year. Please contact him if you know of a suitable candidate.
