REPORT FROM PRESIDENT ON RECENT TRIP TO INDIA
On January 5-19, 2006, I traveled to the state of Uttar Pradesh in India
to participate in a polio-eradication Sub-National Immunization Day on
January 15th.  I was part of a group of 36 Rotarians from the U.S. and
Canada.  Uttar Pradesh is located east and north of Delhi and we
immunized in the areas where polio cases are still being discovered.

We were privileged to meet Rotarians in the cities of Delhi, Jaipur,
Agra and Varanasi.  We toured these cities, attended Rotary meetings,
visited club project sites and individual's homes before separating into
groups of 4 for the Immunization Day activities.  I traveled by car with
my three teammates (& a driver who couldn't speak English) from Delhi to
Muzaffarnagar.  We stayed in the home of a Rotarian and participated in
Rotary and polio immunization activities for 4 days.  We were treated
like royalty and I will never forget the hundreds of people I met.

I look forward to sharing more with you on May 4th, when Cindy has me on
the schedule to present a program.

Cindy Sheltmire introduced Richard Mendenhall who spoke to us about the Mizzou Flagship Council.

The Mizzou Flagship Council is a new organization created to support and advance the interests of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Alumni and friends of MU established the Council, which operates independently from the University. The purpose of the Mizzou Flagship Council is to generate support for MU's mission of teaching, research, service and economic development and to preserve and strengthen MU’s national competitive advantage and its role as a powerful economic engine for the state. Richard Mendenhall of Columbia is serving as the acting chairman of the founding board of directors.

The Mizzou Flagship Council hopes to collect $300,000 annually. Its goals include hiring an executive director and a Jefferson City lobbyist and influencing the selection of university curators, who are appointed by the governor.

Richard presented a PowerPoint presentation detailing the history of the University of Missouri-Columbia all the way back to the construction of the first camous Building - Academic Hall - which was built in 1839 and funded by the citizens.

Additional interesting facts include:

- 1982 Fire destroys Academic Hall leaving only the columns.
-  May, 1983 - Injunction issued to prevent columns being torn down.
-  Memorial Union built in 1922.

Students/Campus

-  In 2005, the ACT average of UMC students is 25.4 (22% higher than nat'l avg.)
-  238,518 alumni worldwide.
-  Mizzou #1 in Journalism

-  One million people use University Extension annually.
-  UMC houses the world's most powerful university research reactor.

Despite all this good news, perhaps the most depressing fact, which would seem to run contrary to actual successes, is that the University of Missouri ranks last in Undergraduate appropriations behind all other Missouri schools.

Additional information is available from Richard Mendenhall at (573) 256-3106.
