Our program today was introduced by Cindy Sheltmire.  Cindy welcomed KOMU-TV News Anchor Jim Riek, who was here to speak about  "The Elements of Good Reporting."

One of the first things we learned about Jim was his nickname, "302", a nick he earned by playng that number of rounds of golf in one year!

Last year,Jim  took first place for his series "Heitholt in Hindsight," focusing on the Kent Heitholt case and teenage violence prevention, and his series "Whatever Happened To…," which caught up with people who had made headlines in the past - including such names as Gus Otto and Joe Teasdale.

Jim shared with us a brief video, "Behind the Scenes at KOMU", which served to illustrate the organized pandemonium that surrounds each newscast.  TV news has certainly evolved, and Jim was not sure that it was all to the good.  Despite that fact, it is still good to know that UMC is the #1 broadcast school in the country, attracting students from around the country and the world. Several members took issue with Jim's statement that "journalism is about changing public policy", creating a little lively debate.
