leading the way

March 8 , 2007 Highlights of Today's Meeting
President Paige Scott

Bright, sunny day, temperature 55 degrees. Despite the beautiful blue sky, Rotarians gathered somewhat downhearted because of the absence of the traditional greeter.  We just did not feel properly welcomed.

We overcame this initial shock by eating too much and visiting too little.

Our esteemed President rang the bell, Rodger Howell led us in the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance, and Barb Peterson introduced visiting Rotarians and guests.   We congratulated those celebrating birthdays and anniversaries.

Members with guests:

Ed Orr will celebrate his birthday on March 9th.

Rex & Donna Neil are celebrating their anniversary today! Congratulations!

Announcements included:

District Conference in Sedalia, May 4, 5, and 6.

85th Anniversary Club Social, April 10.

Club Photo to be taken March 22, proper attire requested.

Judy Elliott is off to Mexico again and invites companions.

GSE Team from Germany visiting April 14-17, we need host families.

Chief Margraff asked us to ignore the Nazi march in downtown Columbia on Saturday.  Be somewhere else.  Do something good for someone.

We are encouraged to give to the Rotary Foundation and use the opportunity to                       Receive matching funds.

June 17-20 is the 2007 International Convention in Salt Lake City. There is great information about the Convention on the Rotary International website.

If you have an interest in the District Conference or the International Convention, please let Paige Scott know.

(Cindy Mustard left early but asked that I not record it in the minutes so I won’t.)

NEED A RIDE TO ROTARY?

The Hospitality Committee prepares get-well cards for members who are ill and can set up rides for members who can't otherwise get to meetings. Please email Caroline Gower or call 874-8712 (work) 874-2451 (home).

Former Dean of the School of Arts and Science, Larry Clark, introduced the program.  Speaking was the new Dean of the School of Arts and Science, Dr. Michael O’Brien.  He spoke of the new 100 million dollar Performing Arts Center to be constructed at the northeast corner of 10th Street and University Avenue.  About $22m of that amount is to renovate the Rynesburger Theater and the building in which it is housed.  The project will take 6-7 years to complete.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:   We're looking for volunteers who would like to take notes at meetings for this weekly newsletter-no more than 4-5 times a year (preferably for one full month).

Special thanks to Jim Bryan for recording our minutes today!

If you're interested, please e-mail Toni Messina for additional details.

I report, somewhat reluctantly because United Methodists don’t believe in gambling, that $100 was added to the Rotary Raffle pot bringing the total to $1090. Steve held the winning ticket (surely some kind of collusion of Deans) but did not draw the winning card.

Respectfully, Jim Bryan, recorder
