John Miles introduced Bill Miller, professor of nuclear engineering at MU.

Dr. Miller’s research interests include innovative uses of radiation for nondestructive analysis and radiation detection systems for this analysis. Associated with this research is radiation detection instrumentation including computer applications and digital design for nuclear systems. As a Certified Health Physicist, recent research has included radiation dosimetry in conjunction with new nuclear medicine based cancer therapeutic agents, MIRD methodology for dose assessment, utilization of mouse models, and instrumentation associated with obtaining experimental data to obtain biodistribution data.

Dr. Miller talked about the Megatons to Megawatts program, initiated in 1993. The US and Soviets had similar quantities of nuclear materials during the cold war. Stockpiles of weapons grade uranium and plutonium still exist, so the Megatons to Megawatts program was designed to dilute the enriched uranium in the Soviet Union to fuel grade levels where it can be used to generate nuclear energy. Shipments of weapons stockpiles for blending back with natural uranium began in 1995.

The Plutonium Management and Disposition Agreement was signed in 2000 but no transfers of material have been made to date. This program would convert the weapons grade plutonium to produce Mixed Oxide Fuel (MOX). The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has authorized the use of MOX in nuclear power plants.
