  • Thanks to Tim Donovan, R.D. Ross, Dee Corn, Paige Scott & Andy Bonderer for attending our District Conference last weekend in Rolla.
  • Jim Elliot generously donated an electronic toothbrush on behalf of our Club to be given as a door prize or as a silent auction item.
  • ALL-CLUB SOCIAL EVENT DATE CHANGE: Mark your calendar - the date of the upcoming social event for all Columbia Rotarians has been changed to June 22 from the previously announced date of June 1. Styled "The Columbia Rotary Redneck Triathlon & BBQ," the event will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, at Cody's Bar & Grill, 2508 Paris Rd. Attendees will be able to enjoy a savory BBQ dinner and cheer on our club's "athletes" as they compete against the other clubs in the 2006 "Redneck Games." The double-elimination, spectator-friendly events comprising the Redneck Games are: 1) Billiards, 2) Darts, and 3) Washer-Pitch. There will also be a bonus event in which one person from each club will ride the mechanical bull. For each of the three main events, we need at least one two-person team. We're looking for club members with expertise in these games -- or at least a lack of embarrassment about playing them in front of a crowd. Volunteers are asked to contact Bob Buckley at 443-3134 or bbuckley@owwlaw.com.

Barbara Weaver, President of the Boone Hospital Center Board of Trustees, presented a program about this venerable institution. Boone County Hospital opened in 1921 with 40 beds, and has been an important part of the community for 86 years.  The facility, now a thriving regional medical center called Boone Hospital Center (BHC), has grown to 375 beds and has more than 2,000 staff members, as well as 350 physicians on staff.  Last year, 2,040 new “Boone Babies” were born there, and the hospital received the “Magnet Award for Excellence in Nursing” and the recognition as a “Top 100 Hospital” (one of only nine hospitals nationwide to receive both awards that year).B

BHC has always been a community leader.  Lately it has pledged $1.15 million to the Youzeum Health and Science Museum, which allowed an additional grant to be secured and move forward with construction plans.  It also sponsors the national program, “Speaking of Women’s Health,” which has two educational events annually.  BHC Rehabilitation offers Driver Asssessment Testing, helping people be prepared when resuming driving.
Some of the programs currently underway include: Women’s Heart Advantage Initiative designed to reduce the incidence and mortality of heart attacks in women; the Center for Advanced Medicine, opening this month; and the Development Clinic for identifying children at risk for delayed development.

The future is bright for Boone Hospital Center, with the following planned:

  • Boone Intergenerational Daycare Center, the first of its kind in Missouri
  • Boone Medical Plaza 4, currently under construction
  • A parking garage connected to Medical Plaza Buildings 3 & 4
