  • Judy Elliott just returned from 3 three weeks in Mexico and presented a beautiful plaque to the Club from our fraternal Club Rotario Cuernavaca Oriente. It reads: "The Rotary Club Cuernavaca Oriente District 4180 gives this award of recognition to our fraternal club The Columbia Rotary Club, Missouri Distrrict 6080 for their service to the community of Cuernavaca, Morelos, May 15, 2006."    Judy also visited thelittle house for Down's Syndrome students that is being constructed with funds from our bracelet sales. She has pictures and a CD from their club about the project that she will share with us at a later date. It is located within the elementary and high school grounds at a neighborhood school.  A retired American has volunteered to do most of the carpentry work.

  • Rotary Info:  The final Board meeting of the year was held this morning.  Darcy recognized the work of all the Board members and welcomed Jim Elliott, Darlene Johnson and Jim Ollar as the newest Board members. Paige is already putting them to work and setting the stage for a great 2006/07 Rotary year.  Thanks to outgoing members Kevin Gibbens, Cecil Moore and Marty Walker for all their work and efforts on behalf of the Club.
  • The Columbia Rotary Redneck Triathlon & BBQ," will be held on Thursday, June 22 from 4 to 9 p.m. at Cody's Bar & Grill, 2508 Paris Rd. Attendees will be able to enjoy a savory BBQ dinner and cheer on our club's "athletes" as they compete against the other clubs in the 2006 "Redneck Games." The double-elimination, spectator-friendly events comprising the Redneck Games are: 1) Billiards, 2) Darts, and 3) Washer-Pitch. There will also be a bonus event in which one person from each club will ride the mechanical bull. For each of the three main events, we need at least one two-person team. We're looking for club members with expertise in these games -- or at least a lack of embarrassment about playing them in front of a crowd. Volunteers are asked to contact Bob Buckley at 443-3134 or bbuckley@owwlaw.com.

Cindy Sheltmire introduced City Manager Bill Watkins who was appointed in January of this year.

Bill provided an update on current projects and issues at City Hall:

  • Ballot Issue in August - This will fund the electric utility, allowing the utility to maintain the current systems we have in place, Rate increase associated with this ballot issue will amount to about 1% per year, or about 60 cents per month for each resident.
  • Essential Air service - Transtates service from the Columbia Regional Airport will be ending shortly.  Currently evaluating proposals from Regions Air and Mesa Air.  The new service is aimed at improving the offerings available in terms of flights and locations.
  • Office Space - City Hall offices remain cramped and the City is expending over $200K per year in third party leases for space,  a situation which will only grow worse as time passes.  Emphasis will be on the continuation of a systematic plan to renovate existing offices and expand CIty Hall.
  • Communications-  A recent employee survey has been conducted to discern the level of satisfaction with various facets of City employment. - everything from job satisfaction, work environment, pay, benefits, rewards, recognition and various other areas.
  • Community Visioning - A recent visioning forum was recently held with over 400 residents from the community. The purpose was to determine the level of interest in participating in a visioning process for the community that will be driven by the citiizens.
