  • Louis announced that the club's Board of Directors approved an additional $1,000 in matching funds for Paul Harris Fellowship contributions to the Rotary Foundation made before July 1. Matches will be made available in $100 increments to members who have not already received a match during the current program year. Checks should be made payable to the Rotary Foundation and given to Treasurer Rollie Hausman at a meeting or mailed to him at 600 Rockhill Rd., Columbia, MO 65201.

  • If you haven’t contributed an annual gift to the Rotary Foundation this year, I hope you will take this opportunity to help grow and sustain the Foundation's many wonderful programs. The Annual Programs Fund’s theme is Every Rotarian, Every Year.  Your $100 per year helps rebuild impoverished communities and nations by resolving conflict, championing human rights, eradicating disease, feeding the hungry, and educating children and adults.  Some examples of what $100 can do include:
  • text books for one elementary school in Zambia
  • cataract operations for three blind individuals in India
  • mosquito netting for 35 homes to help prevent the spread of malaria in Bangladesh
  • a hearing aid for a child in Pakistan
  • The Columbia Rotary Redneck Triathlon & BBQ," will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, at Cody's Bar & Grill, 2508 Paris Rd. Attendees will be able to enjoy a savory BBQ dinner and cheer on our club's "athletes" as they compete against the other clubs in the 2006 "Redneck Games." The double-elimination, spectator-friendly events comprising the Redneck Games are: 1) Billiards, 2) Darts, and 3) Washer-Pitch. There will also be a bonus event in which one person from each club will ride the mechanical bull. For each of the three main events, we need at least one two-person team. We're looking for club members with expertise in these games -- or at least a lack of embarrassment about playing them in front of a crowd. Volunteers are asked to contact Bob Buckley at 443-3134 or bbuckley@owwlaw.com.

  • Sympathy:

Bob Finley, a 30 year member of our Club, passed away last Thursday.  Bob was a cadet in the Merchant Marine Academy and later a serviceman in the Navy during WWII.  He was a professor of agricultural economics at MU.  Private graveside services will be held in Gardner, KS. (Moment of silence to remember Bob) Caroline Gower has a card she will be passing around for Bob’s wife, Gloria Finley.

  • New Member:

Gertrude Thompson introduced our newest member, Tina Patel.  Tina is the sales director of the University Club.  Welcome Tina!

Dave Griggs is the newest member of the Board of Directors for the Boone County Fire Protection District.  Dave introduced Steve Paulsell to present.

The Boone County Fire Protection District was formed in 1970 by voter approval.  Locations included Columbia, Rocheport, Hallsville, and Harrisburg.  It represents the largest geographical fire district in Missouri covering 532 square miles.
It now has 14 stations and 120 pieces of equipment.

The BCFPD is a volunteer department on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  These volunteers respond to all types of emergency situations like house fires, automobile accidents, brush fires, flood, rescue situations, and chemical spills.   The volunteers logged 117,000 hours of volunteered time in 2005 and that’s a conservative estimate. These volunteers save the county roughly 15 million dollars.

The BCFPD does have a number of specialty teams.

Wildland team:  This team assists in fighting forest fires.

MO task force 1:  Urban search and rescue

Survival kids:  teach safety to children

            FBI accredited bomb squad

            Honor Guard

            Dive Team
