Mary Beck, Vice President for Patient Care Services at Boone Hospital Center, discussed the national, state and local nursing shortage. This is due largely to increased demand as well as a supply side shortage of nurses. Other reasons: - Baby boomers are aging and requiring more services - Population is living longer = The average age of nurses is 49 years - many are retiring or leaving the profession. Fortunately, nursing schools have reacted to the trend and are expanding their programs and enrollments are definitely on the rise, due in part to attractive wages for graduates. Starting base at BHC is $15.61 (day shift) plus a shift differential of $4.00. Most nurses strating out do not get the luxury of a day shift position. __________________________________
