  • Steve Scott announced that Rotary International Directories are now available. If you are interested, the cost is $9 per book or CD, or $15 for both.
  • The Columbia Rotary Redneck Triathlon & BBQ," will be held tonight from 4 to 9 p.m. at Cody's Bar & Grill, 2508 Paris Rd. Attendees will be able to enjoy a savory BBQ dinner and cheer on our club's "athletes" as they compete against the other clubs in the 2006 "Redneck Games." The double-elimination, spectator-friendly events comprising the Redneck Games are: 1) Billiards, 2) Darts, and 3) Washer-Pitch. There will also be a bonus event in which one person from each club will ride the mechanical bull. For each of the three main events, we need at least one two-person team. We're looking for club members with expertise in these games -- or at least a lack of embarrassment about playing them in front of a crowd. Volunteers are asked to contact Bob Buckley at 443-3134 or bbuckley@owwlaw.com.

Mary Beck, Vice President for Patient Care Services at Boone Hospital Center, discussed the national, state and local nursing shortage.  This is due largely to increased demand as well as a supply side shortage of nurses.

Other reasons:

- Baby boomers are aging and requiring more services
- Population is living longer
= The average age of nurses is 49 years - many are retiring or leaving the profession.

Fortunately, nursing schools have reacted to the trend and are expanding their programs and enrollments are definitely on the rise, due in part to attractive wages for graduates. Starting base at BHC is $15.61 (day shift) plus a shift differential of $4.00. Most nurses strating out do not get the luxury of a day shift position.
