August 1-4 is Rotary Week at Camp Wonderland, a residential summer camp on the Lake of the Ozarks.  This is a camp for physically and mentally challenged children that was founded in 1970. The Club is looking for interested Rotarians to commit ¾ of a day to spend transporting supplies to the camp and helping out as needed.  It’s a great way to build camaraderie with fellow Rotarians and help out a great cause along the way!  Sign up today for this opportunity!  (By the way, it counts as a make-up.)

  • FUND RAISER:  The club is now actively selling sterling silver bracelets with a pawprint charm as a fundraiser. 20% of the profits go to the local community and 80% to projects in Mexico.  Check out the flyer for additional details, or see Janice, Darlene or Phil.

Thoughts from President Wells:

President Darcy Wells took a few moments to outline her goals and plans for her service year.  They include:

1.    Sustain and grow Club membership (this mirrors RI and district goals).  Darcy pointed out that Steve Scott reported a loss of 18 members in the last year.
2.    Increase fundraising to address the needs in our community and internationally.
3.    Increase visibility of Rotary throughout the community by strategic public relations and communications.  This will ultimately help with goals 1 and 2.
4.    Continue to support the Rotary Foundation and its programs through participation and giving.
5.    Develop Club Leaders beyond the Club level.

HISTORYMOMENT

ROTARY VILLAGE CORPS

One of the newer programs in Rotary's panoply of worldwide service activities and projects is the Rotary Village Corps. This new form of grass roots self-help service was initiated by RI President M.A.T. Caparas in 1986 as a means of improving the quality of life in villages, neighborhoods and communities. Frequently there is an abundance of available labor, but no process to mobilize men and women to conduct useful projects of community improvement.

A Rotary Village Corps-or Rotary Community Corps as they are called in industrialized countries-is a Rotary club-sponsored group of non-Rotarians who desire to help their own community by conducting a specific improvement project. The Rotary members provide the guidance, encouragement, organizational structure and some of the material assistance for the Rotary Village Corps, which in turn contributes the manpower to help their own community. Thus, the Rotary Village Corps provides a totally new process for Rotarians to serve in communities of great need.

Rotary Community Corps have been organized mainly in depressed ghetto areas of major cities where groups of individuals need the organizational and managerial skills of Rotarians to undertake valuable self-help community projects.

The Rotary Village Corps program offers a totally new dimension to the concept of service to improve the quality of life.

Cindy Sheltmire introduced the speaker, Will Patterson, Account Executive, Mizzou Sports Properties.

Will, standing in for Laird Veach at the last minute, provided a glimpse of the who, what, why, when, where and how of Mizzou Sports Properties.

WHO & WHAT:    Mizzou Sports Properties (MSP), a subsidiary of Learfield Communications, is the official multi-media rights holder for MU Athletics.  MSP won the rights through competitive bid.  A new bid/contract is just being finalized and will be in effect until 2013.  MSP has extensive radio and television outlets in its inventory.  There are 58 radio stations across the state that carry Mizzou sports.  Television carries basketball only.

WHEN:    Clyde Lear, founder of Learfield Communications, started his business in 1972.  In 1998, MSP had its first multi-media contract with Mizzou.  The first contract had a $12,000 guarantee to Mizzou.  The new contract is reported to contain something like $5-8 million in guaranteed revenue.

WHERE:    MSP is located in the Learfield complex in Jefferson City, Missouri.  They handle multi-media contracts for schools around the country.

WHY:    Generate revenue for Mizzou, Learfield and Corporate Sponsors.
