Cindy Sheltmire introduced Bill Stolz, senior manuscript specialist for the MU Ellis Library Western Historical Manuscripts Collection
University of Missouri / State Historical Society of Missouri
23 Ellis Library
University of Missouri
Columbia, Missouri 65201-5149 USA
voice 573-882-6028 | fax 573-884-0345 | WHMC@umsystem.edu

Bill Stolz presented a visual history of Columbia showing pictures from history and the present day.

Columbia started as “Smithton” in 1818, named after the land agent. Because of lack of good drinking water, the town was moved east of Flat Branch Creek in 1821 to where the court house is today and renamed “Columbia.” The Boone’s Lick Trail was then rerouted down Broadway.

In 1839 the University of Missouri was founded by James S. Rollins with $120,000 and land, all donated by local businessmen. The cornerstone of Academic Hall was laid in 1840. The building burned in 1892 and was replaced by Jesse Hall in 1895.

Christian College, now Columbia College where this Rotary Club meets, was founded as a women’s college in 1851.

Some approximate population figures:
1860 – 2,000
1900 –5,600
1920 – 10,000
1930 – 14,000
2000 – 84,000

Mr. Stolz also showed a few pictures of the African-American neighborhood known as “Sharp End,” including Edna Harris’ restaurant. The post office and the Columbia Daily Tribune building are there now.

Some of the historical landmarks shown were Booche’s (originally in what we now know as the Strollway Center) Alton’s Garage/Columbia Auto Company (now the Fieldhouse), the Uptown Theatre (Slackers), the Haden Opera House (destroyed by fire in 1901), the local hotels and the Wabash depot.
