Cindy Sheltmire introduced Dr. Frank Booth, UMC Physiology Professor, who was here to talk about  "America's Obesity Epidemic."

Bottom line:  The problem in America is getting worse!!

Children are too immature to be responsible for their own obesity. Children are becoming less active due to increased popularity and use of the television, video games and the internet. In 1950, children watched approximately 10 hours per week of television.  By the year 2000, this number had increased to over 40 hours per week (4-5 fold increase).

Adults need to more responsible for their child's inactivity. Although we will never reach this point, Dr Booth noted that at the present rate of increase, the trend line shows that by 2044, 100% of children will be obese.

The problem of obesity does not only affect children. In 1985, 1 of 10 adults were obese (10%).  By 2001, this figure had increased to 25%.

According to Dr. Booth, problems associated with inactivity include:

  • Earlier death - 20 years ago, the U.S. population ranked first in longevity on the planet. Today, American women rank 19th and American men rank 28th.
  • Earlier onset of adult, or Type 2, diabetes - Increasing numbers of children are getting Type 2 diabetes. The Centers for Disease Control predict that the number of Type 2 diabetes cases in the United States will triple to 39 million by 2050.
  • Onset of different types of cancer - other research has linked inactivity to breast cancer, colon cancer and pancreatic cancer.
