Our speaker today was introduced by Cindy Sheltmire.

Associate Circuit Judge Chris Kelly was introduced by Cindy Sheltmire.  He discussed everything from local issues to the selection of the nation's Supreme Court.  As for the national court battle, he described it as a battle with the newest nomination of Alito.  The conservatives are happy with the choice but will be a major battle with liberals.  It’s a true exercise of political power.  Judge Kelly discussed Roe vs. Wade and that the fundamental legal question has to do with right to privacy.  Alito has written in favor that right to privacy does not allow a woman to abort without consent of her husband.  Judge Kelly firther talked about super precedent in that the principles are being so imbedded in the law that it would be difficult to be changed.

As for the local courts, Judge Kelly was extremely complimentary of the talent we have in Boone County.  He spoke highly of Judge Ellen Roper’s handling of the Ferguson case.  Most cases like that in other areas of the country would have taken 6 months.  Judge Kelly mentioned that he is a part of Civil, Criminal, Small Claims, Traffic, and Adult abuse cases.  He explained that a huge problem in our society is adult abuse and that most serious abuse is male to female.  Judge Kelly also feels strongly about his traffic docket.  He wants to encourage people to have a license and insurance.  Further he stated that most traffic accidents can be avoided if people slow down and avoid passing on the right.  He also discouraged cell phone use.  We all do it, but we know we shouldn’t. It really is truly reckless.

Judge Kelly predicts a few changes in the local courts.  He guesses that there will be 2 associate judge openings and 2 circuit judge openings.
