SPOTLIGHT ON NEW MEMBER

Rhett Brengarth

Grew up on a farm outside Boonville, MO. Graduated from the University of MO in December 2003 with a BS in Animal Science and a minor in Ag Economics
from the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.  Went to work directly out of college for UMB Bank at the corporate headquarters in Kansas City for one year and unfortunately moved to the state of Kansas for that year!  Went through a corporate management rotation program that introduced him to various business lines of the bank.  Decided upon commercial lending and the opportunity to move back closer to home.

Moved back to Columbia in January 2005 and became a commercial lender with UMB Bank Columbia.

In his spare time he helps out on the family farm in Cooper County.  It is
a diversified operation with both row crops and livestock.  He also enjoys
the outdoors, hunting and fishing.  He is also an avid Mizzou sports fan and loves to watch all Mizzou sports!

Cindy Sheltmire introduced our speaker, Nicole Kubas, who studied abroad in Ecuador on a Rotary program.

Nicole Kubas, a senior at Hickman High School, shared highlights of her 10-month trip to Ecuador.  She lived with two host families in the mountains of Ecuador.  She attended school at a Catholic school in town where she pursued the literature track.  The school day lasted nine hours and students had about five hours of home work each evening.  She didn’t speak Spanish when she arrived in country but was able to understand it within a couple of months and speak in Spanish some by three months.

Club members asked some questions about Nicole’s experiences:
Q:  What surprised you most about this country?
A:  How people live differently, handle situations differently and yet come to the same end result.  I thought there was a certain way things should be done.  This experience helped me understand that there’s more than one way to look at things.

Q:  What did people in Ecuador think of Americans?
A:  It was a mixed bag.  It kind of depended on who you talked to.  There were the standard stereotypes and misconceptions about America.

Q:  Did you travel while you were there?
A:  I traveled farther up in the mountains with my Rotary club to give out candy and presents to the local children.  I also spent a week in the Amazon and a week on a yacht exploring the Galapagos Islands.  I met up with some other Rotary Exchange students for a time on the beach.

Q:  Do you hope to visit Ecuador again?
A:  I do.  In fact, I’m going to try to go back this summer.
